Wellness Massage
A holistic form of massage focused on promoting health and well-being, rather than diagnosing disease; common in spa and wellness settings.
Draping
The use of towels or sheets to cover the body during massage to maintain modesty, warmth, and comfort.
Endangerment Site
An area of the body where nerves, arteries, or veins lie close to the surface and may be injured by deep pressure.
Contra-indication
A condition or factor that indicates massage should not be performed or should be modified.
Aftercare
Care and guidance provided after a massage, including advice, products, and additional services to support recovery.
5S Methodology
A Japanese work-organization method: Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Systemize), Seiso (Sweep), Seiketsu (Standardize), Shitsuke (Self-discipline).
SWOT Analysis
A strategic tool to assess Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats in a business context.
Value Proposition
The compelling reason customers should buy a product or service; the value offered to the customer.
Unique Selling Proposition (USP)
The factor that differentiates a product or service from competitors; the reason customers choose it.
Branding
Creating a name, symbol, or design that identifies and differentiates a product or service and communicates the brand promise.
Product Development
The process of identifying customer needs, developing concepts, testing, and refining a new product or service.
Acupressure
Applying pressure to specific points on the body to maintain health, relieve pain, or balance energy.
Hilot (TAWAS)
Filipino traditional massage system; Tawas is a Hilot modality assessing health through palpation and energy balance.
Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water)
A traditional Chinese energy framework describing interrelated elements that balance the body and environment.
Interpersonal Communication
The exchange of feelings and attitudes between people, crucial for client consultations and rapport.
ISPA 10 Elements
A framework from the International Spa Association outlining essential aspects of the spa experience and integration.
Petrissage
A kneading massage technique that lifts and rolls soft tissue to improve circulation and tissue mobility.
Effleurage
Gliding strokes used at the start and end of a massage; promotes venous return and lymphatic drainage.
Tapotement (Percussion)
A group of percussion techniques (hacking, cupping, beating, pounding) used to stimulate tissues.
Frictions
Deep, localized movements across muscle fibers to address specific tensions or adhesions.
Veinous/Lymphatic Direction
Massage technique should follow the direction of venous return toward the heart and lymphatic drainage toward lymph nodes.
Chair Massage
A short massage performed with the client fully clothed, typically in a seated position.
Branding
Strategic marketing practice of creating and maintaining a brand’s identity and promise.
USP/Branding Elements
Elements like tagline and logo used to communicate a brand’s unique value and differentiate it.
Environment and Market (EM)
Assessment of local conditions, resources, needs, and opportunities to plan business in wellness massage.
PECs (Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies)
Key traits and skills (e.g., hardworking, confident, planner) that support entrepreneurship in wellness massage.
