Goals for the Second New Deal

helps sharecroppers and migrant workers

Resettlement Administration (1935)

loans money to small farmers to buy land (replaced by the Farm Security Association)

Farm Security Association (FSA)

agency that made pictorial record of the time with journalists/photographers (Dorothea Lange, slave interviews, etc.)

Works Progress Administration (WPA)

-built airports, roads, libraries, schools, and hospitals to employ teachers, actors, writers, and artists
-$5 billion budget and helped more than 8 million people

National Youth Administration (NYA)

an agency that provided 2 million young, high school and college level, Americans (including African-Americans) with aid and employment during the Great Depression

Wagner Act (National Labor Relations Act)

-replaced the NRA
-established national labor relations board
-companies could not threaten workers or fire union members

Fair Labor Standards Act

1938 act that set maximum hours and minimum wages
-44 hour weeks = 25 cents an hour (1938)
-40 hour weeks = 40 cents an hour (1940)

Social Security Act

-set up a pension for retired workers aged 65+
-aided people with disabilities
-unemployment compensation
-civil service exams (to help stop nepotism)
