what is elastic deformation?
when an object can go back to its original shape and length after the force has been removed
how do we change an objects length or shape?
we have to apply more than one force. if we only applied one force to a stationary object, then the forces are no longer balanced
inelastic deformation
when we stretch inelastic materials, they do not return to their original length when the forces are removed
a feature of an elastic material
the stretching forces are quest in magnitude but opposite in direction
when is work done?
when a force stretches or compressed an object and causes energy to be transferred to the elastic potential energy store of the object
what is extension directly proportional to?
force
equation linking force, spring constant and extension
Force (N) = spring constant (N/m) x extension (m)
