Language
A system of communication that combines symbols, such as words or gestural signs, in rule-based ways to create meaning.
Phonemes
The smallest sound units in a language that can change meaning; around 100 phonemes exist globally, with each language using a subset.
Morphemes
The smallest units of meaning in language, composed of one or more phonemes arranged according to linguistic rules.
Syntax
The set of grammatical rules that determines how words are organized into meaningful phrases or sentences.
Extra linguistic information
Elements of communication vital for interpreting meaning but not part of the language content, such as facial expressions and tone.
Onomatopoeia
Words that phonetically imitate, resemble, or suggest the sound that they describe, like 'buzz' or 'meow'.
Sound symbolism
The principle that certain speech sounds are naturally associated with particular meanings, like 'mini' feeling small due to the sound /i/.
Language Acquisition
The process by which children learn to perceive, produce, and understand language, typically starting in infancy.
Syntactic development
The stage in language acquisition where children begin to combine words into phrases, progressing from single words to more complex sentences.
Communication of complex ideas
The advantage of language that allows for the coordination of social interactions and assists in complex activities.
