Armenian Genocide(1915-1923)

Occurred in the Ottoman Empire with 1.5 million Ethnic Armenians being massacred, due to growing Turkish nationalism which saw Armenians as a threat because of the suspicion that they were helping the Russian in WW1. EFFECTS: campaigns against Armenians, deaths, exiled people.

Holodomor Famine(1932-1933)

Occurred in Ukraine with Ukrainian peasants and farmers dying, Because Ukraine was a breadbasket Russia collected their grain for industrial efforts and collectivized farms, resistance was met with harsh repression and RED TRAINS used to take their seed/grain.

EFFECTS: deaths from starvation, villages gone , repression to destroy Ukrainian Nationalism.

The Holocaust(1941-1945)

In Nazi-Occupied Europe 6 million jews were murdered because Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany’s economic turmoil after WW1 and created the Nuremberg law identifying jews as non-citizens. propagandas were designed to dehumanize jews, their properties, WW2 escalated racial policies to genocide.

EFFECTS: 6 million dead, displaced, establishment of Israel 1948.

Cambodian Genocide(1975-1979)

Buddhists, intellectuals, professionals, etc were killed when found disloyal to the Khmer rouge that was established after instability, civil war. their goal was to create a classless society free from foreign countries. Because of their extreme ideology, anyone could be targeted.

EFFECTS: 22-24% Cambodian pop. died, followed by Vietnam invasion.

Rwandan Genocide

Planned campaign of mass murder in Rwanda that occurred over the course of some 100 days in April–July 1994. The genocide was conceived by extremist elements of Rwanda’s majority Hutu population who planned to kill the minority Tutsi population. Tutsis were given privileges by German and Belgian to administer their policies, causing 1959 rev by Hutus, later both were ethnically divided after independence in 1962, President habyarimana’s assassination was the catalyst for the genocide.
