Steps of the EBP process
Ask a clinically meaningful question; collect the evidence; critically appraise the evidence; synthesize the evidence; integrate evidence with clinical expertise and patient values; make a decision and implement; evaluate outcomes.
Ask a clinically meaningful question
The first step in the EBP process to frame a relevant clinical question.
Collect the evidence
Second step in the EBP process to gather relevant research and data.
Critically appraise the evidence
Evaluate the validity and applicability of the evidence.
Synthesize the evidence
Combine findings from multiple sources to form a cohesive conclusion.
Integrate evidence with clinical expertise and patient values
Apply the evidence within the context of clinician experience, patient preferences, and the clinical setting.
Make a decision and implement
Choose and apply the best evidence in practice.
Evaluate outcomes
Assess the results of the implemented decision.
Quantitative vs Qualitative
Two major research approaches; Quantitative uses numerical data, Qualitative explores meanings and experiences.
Purpose of the study: Identification
One of the listed purposes of a study: identify phenomena or variables.
Purpose of the study: Description
One of the listed purposes: describe characteristics or phenomena.
Purpose of the study: Exploration
One of the listed purposes: explore phenomena.
Purpose of the study: Prediction and Control
One of the listed purposes: predict outcomes and control variables.
Purpose of the study: Explanation
One of the listed purposes: explain relationships or phenomena.
Teenage test-taking anxiety
Anxiety teenagers experience when taking tests.
6-week behavioral intervention
A six-week program designed to affect teenagers' test-taking anxiety.
Lived experience
Subjective experience of individuals; central focus in phenomenology.
Lived experience of the SAT for teens with test-taking anxiety
Subjective experience of taking the SAT by anxious teenagers.
Quantitative Research
A category of research that uses numerical data; includes experimental, quasi-experimental, and nonexperimental designs.
Qualitative Research
A category of research that explores meanings and experiences; includes phenomenology, ethnography, and grounded theory.
Phenomenology
Qualitative method focused on the study of lived experiences.
Ethnography
Qualitative method studying cultures and groups.
Grounded Theory
Qualitative method aimed at generating theory from data.
SAT
Standardized test mentioned in the notes as context for test-taking anxiety.
