Linguistics
scientific study of language, specifically focused on lang. form, lang. meaning and lang. in context
Subsystems of Language:
Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Lexicology, Syntax, Discourse analysis, Semantics, Pragmatics
Lexicology
deals with properties, usage and origin of words, regularities, relations in the vocabulary of a lang. (Includes morphology, semantics, etymology, lexicography). Also deals with the way individual words operate and affect each other words in the same given context
General lexicology:
study of vocabulary any particular lang. and its specific features
Special lexicology:
study of the vocabulary of a particular lang
Synchronic approach
vocabulary of a lang. as it exists at a given time
Diachronic approach
changes and the development of vocabulary in the course of time
Lexeme:
unit of lexical meaning exists regardless of any inflectional endings it may have or no. of words it may contain
Vocabulary, lexis, lexicon:
total stock of meaningful units in a lang. - words, idioms, parts of words which express meaning (prefixes, suffixes)
Language
system of phonic, lexical, grammatical levels
Morphology:
study of forms of words and their components, with morphemes as the smallest meaningful units that cannot be broken down further (free morphemes: cat, learn, comfort/bound morphemes: -er, un-, -able)
Semantics:
study of meaning with the aim of explaining, describing meaning(pragmatic, sentence, lexical semantics)
Etymology
study of the whole history of words
Lexicography:
special technique related to the writing, compilation of dictionaries and to the principles that underlie the process of compiling and editing dictionaries
Dictionary:
reference book that lists the words of one or more languages, usu. in alphabetical order, along with information about their spelling, pronunciation, grammatical status, meaning, history and use
Syntax
deals with the relationship between words in constructions and the way these words are put together to form sentences
Stylistics:
study of the nature, functions, structure of stylistic devices and with the investigation of each style of lang. - its aim, structure, characteristics features, the effect it produces and its interrelation with other styles of lang.
Style
seen as the selection of a set of linguistic features from all the possibilities in a lang.(formal style vs. informal style; scientific vs. religious)
