Innate Immunity
Rapid and short-lived immune response that is repetitive and interactive, but non-reactive to the host.
Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs)
Receptors on innate immune cells, epithelial, and endothelial cells that recognize patterns on pathogens.
Pathogen-Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs)
Molecules present on the surface of microbes that are recognized by PRRs.
Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns (DAMPs)
Molecules released from damaged host cells that are recognized by PRRs.
Main Types of Innate Immune Cells
Neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, and monocytes/macrophages.
Toll-like receptors (TLRs)
Receptors discovered that can detect different types of patterns including bacterial lipopolyptides, peptoglycans, polysaccharides, flagellin parts.
NOD-like receptors
Free floating receptors within the cell cytoplasm space.
Complements
Series of proteins made by the liver that are able to bind to microbes and have a cascade effect that ends up activating other types of immune cells.
Phagocytosis
The process of a cell ingesting and destroying pathogens or cellular debris.
Dendritic Cells
Professional antigen-presenting cells that bridge the innate and adaptive immune systems.
