Born in Brooklyn, New York. Had to attempt to earn a PhD twice after failing to pass his comprehensive exams the first time. Was very active in gay rights movements and political activism during his second attempt at a PhD. He wanted to “devote his professional career toward changing society’s attitude toward homosexuality, and to provide proper counseling services to the LGBT community”. He gave a presentation at the American Psychiatric Association where he argued for removing homosexuality as a mental illness in the DSM. Came out as gay after he completed his PhD.
