A major political unit in which a sovereign authority exercises control over a large territory through formal annexations or informal domination.
Imperialism
Forces and activities contributing to the construction of transcolonial empires.
Colonization
A process of territorial acquisition.
Border Colonization
Extensive opening up of land for human use, pushing a frontier/border into the wilderness for agricultural purposes or to attain natural resources.
Overseas Settlement Colonization
Development of settlement off-shoots across the sea, often involving the displacement of indigenous populations.
New England Type Colonization
Growth of an agrarian settlement populace that ousted the indigenous population.
Caribbean Type Colonization
Recruiting workers after expulsion of the indigenous population by forced import of slaves.
African Type Colonization
A politically dominant settler minority expels an indigenous peasant population from the best land, remaining dependent on their labor.
Colony
A new political organization created by invasion, built on pre-colonial conditions, with alien rulers dependent on a remote imperial center.
Exploitation Colonies
Economic exploitation through trade monopolies and use of natural resources.

Utilization of cheap land and labor, cultivation of social, religious, and cultural life.
