How was the south when the war ended?
The south was in total chaos and ruin, politically, phyiscally, and economically
What did congress pass before Lincolns death and what did it do?
The 13th amendment and it abolished slavery.
What did Lincoln do with all of the Southerners?
He had proposed a rather lenient plan which provided amnesty(pardon) to all southern who swore an oath to the union.
How did more extreme or, more radical republicans feel about what Lincoln did with all the southerners?
They didn't approve. They wanted to punish and south and keep ex-conferates out of power.
When did Lincoln get assassinated, where, and by whom?
April 14th, 1865, at Fords Theatre, by John Wilkes Booth.
Who becomes president after Lincoln and where was he from?
Andrew Johnson, he was from Tennessee and was a former slave owner.
What did President Johnson lack?
He didn't carry himself like Lincoln and wasn't as good a president as him.
What are black codes and what did they do?
"Codes" southern states began passing to limit the rights of African Americans, example: blacks couldn't own weapons(which stopped them from getting food for their family.), they can't meet together after sundown, and can't marry whites.
When slaves got freed what was a big problem they had?
Freed slaves couldn't read or write, which stopped them from getting jobs and they had no money nor land.
How was this problem fixed and what organization was it called?
Called the freedman's bureau, a group of people helping illiterate/homeless slaves get on their feet. This included giving them jobs, money, and a roof under their heads.
What did the 14th amendment do?
Guaranteed citizenship to anyone born in the u.s, and this guaranteed equal protection under the law for all citizens.
How did they impeach (get rid of) president Johnston?
They passed tenure of office act, which said the president couldn't fire anyone w/o(without) senate approval. Johnston then fired his secretary of war and the house of reps, then they all voted to impeach him.
What are carpetbaggers?
Northerners who came south after the war, these people were often corrupt. They took advantage of southerners and mocked them.
What are scalawags?
Southern who cooperated with republican rule.
In reconstruction what happened for African Americans?
Male African Americans were able to vote, and 14 male African Americans were elected to the House of Representatives, and 2 to the senate.
How did white southerns feel about blacks getting more power?
They began organizing groups such as the ku klux klan.
How was grant politically?
He was a poor political leader.
What was the compromise of 1877?
To keep peace, democrats said they'd let Hayes win if the republicans ended reconstruction. The Agreement: Hayes would be president, reconstruction would be ended and the south was left alone to deal with race issues.
What are tenant farmers?
Paid rent for the land they farmed.
What is Sharecropping?
Farmed someone else's land and got a portion of the crops.
