Musculoskeletal System
Composed of the skeletal system and the muscular system working together to support and move the body.
Types of Muscles
Skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle.
Skeletal Muscles
Muscles that move bones and enable voluntary physical activities; under conscious control and attached to bones.
Smooth Muscles
Muscles found in internal organs like the stomach and intestines; not under conscious control (involuntary).
Cardiac Muscle
Muscle specific to the heart; contracts to reduce chamber space and push blood into vessels.
Extensibility
The ability to be stretched.
Elasticity
The ability to return to the original length after being stretched.
Perimysium
Sheath of connective tissue that surrounds bundles of muscle cells, allowing them to function as individual units.
Epimysium
Sheaths of connective tissue that hold bundles of muscle together and taper to form the tendon.
