Epinephrine use by EMTs
Authorized in many states and EMS agencies for treating life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Epinephrine effects
Constricts blood vessels to raise blood pressure and reduce swelling; dilates air passages in the lungs to improve airflow.
Auto-injector dosing
Typically delivers a preset 0.3 mg of epinephrine automatically.
IM injection alternative
Some areas allow epinephrine to be given via IM injection using a 1 mg/mL vial with a needle and syringe.
Auto-injector procedure step 1
Grasp the unit with the tip pointing downward and form a fist around it; do not place thumb over either end.
Auto-injector procedure step 2
Pull off the activation cap with the other hand.
Auto-injector procedure step 3
Hold the tip near the outer thigh and insert firmly at a 90-degree angle; do not allow it to bounce.
Auto-injector procedure step 4
Hold firmly in the thigh for several seconds.
Post-administration disposal
Immediately place the used auto-injector in an appropriate sharps container.
