Water Polo
A team water sport where the objective is to score goals by throwing a ball into the opponent’s net.
Team Composition
Each water polo team consists of 7 swimmers in the pool and 7 alternates on the deck.
Positions in Water Polo
The main positions are goalie, left flat, right flat, left-wing, right-wing, point, and hole set.
Game Duration
A water polo game consists of four quarters, each lasting 8 minutes.
Overtime in Water Polo
If the game is tied, it often goes to two overtime periods, each lasting a few minutes.
Shootout
In case of a tie after overtime, teams may select players for a penalty shootout against the opposing goalie.
Shot Clock
The offense has 30 seconds to shoot on goal.
5-Meter Line
An area that acts like a 'penalty box'; fouls here can lead to free shots on goal.
2-Meter Line
Similar to an 'offside' line in soccer; offensive players must be mindful of it to avoid losing possession.
Ordinary Fouls
Minor fouls that result in a turnover for the opposing team to make a free pass.
Major Fouls
Serious fouls that result in the offending player spending 20 seconds in the Penalty Box.
Brutality Fouls
Severe fouls leading to immediate ejection from the game.
Basic Water Polo Skills
Includes one-handed passing, catching, one-handed shooting, and dribbling.
High Head Technique
Chin clears water for visibility while maintaining a strong swimming position.
Eggbeater Kick
A swimming technique used to maintain upright position while passing or shooting.
Equipment for Water Polo
Players wear swimsuits, swim caps, bonnets (goalies have differently colored ear parts), and mouthguards.
