Protection from discrimination based on race, national origin, religion, sex, and other characteristics

Thirteenth Amendment

Prohibited slavery (Civil War Amendment")

Fourteenth Amendment

Citizenship, due process, equal protection, privileges and immunities

Equal Protection Clause

A person cannot be denied the equal protection of the laws

Fifteenth Amendment

Granted voting rights to people of color (just men at the time ratified)

Separate but equal

There would be separate facilities for people of color and whites, that were supposed to be of equal quality

Segregation

The separation of Black and white people in public facilities

Doll Study

used to drive Brown v. Board saying that even when schools are of the same quality, Black children begin to feel bad about themselves

De jure segregation

segregation written into law

De facto segregation

based on other factors but not written into law

Civil Disobedience

intentionally breaking the law to protest injustice (Ex. Rosa Parks)

Civil Rights Act of 1964

Authorized the federal gov’t to withhold grants from districts that did not integrate their schools. Outlawed racial segregation in schools and public places. Outlawed employment discrimination based on race or ethnicity, religion, nation origin, or gender

Voting Rights Act of 1965

Outlaws literacy tests and authorizes the Justice Department to send federal officers to register voters in uncooperative cities, counties, and states.

Affirmative Action

policy designed to provide priority to historically marginalized groups

Nineteenth Amendment

gave women the right to vote

Title IX

Females cannot be excluded from participation, denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal aid. Large impact on girls’ sports
