Colombian Exchange
The widespread transfer of plants, animals, culture, human populations, technology, diseases, and ideas between the Americas, West Africa, and the Old World in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Aztec
A Mesoamerican people who established a powerful empire in central Mexico in the 14th to 16th centuries, known for their advanced agricultural and architectural achievements.
Encomienda System
A labor system created by the Spanish during the colonization of the Americas, where a Spanish encomendero was granted indigenous laborers who paid tributes (in labor, gold, or goods) in exchange for protection and conversion to Catholicism.
Treaty of Tordesillas
A treaty signed in 1494 between Spain and Portugal that divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between them. It established a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands, with Spain claiming all lands to the west and Portugal all lands to the east.
Land Bridge
A strip of land connecting two continents, allowing the migration of animals and people. A prominent example is the Bering Strait Land Bridge, which connected Asia and North America during ice ages.
