Amendments

First Amendment

Protects freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and the right to petition the government.

Second Amendment

Protects the right to bear arms.

Third Amendment

Prohibits the government from forcing citizens to quarter (house) soldiers during peacetime without their consent.

Fourth Amendment

Protects citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government.

Fifth Amendment

Protects citizens from self-incrimination, double jeopardy, and deprivation of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.

Sixth Amendment

Protects the rights of those accused of crimes, including the right to a speedy trial, an impartial jury, and legal counsel.

Seventh Amendment

Guarantees the right to a trial by jury in certain civil cases.

Eighth Amendment

Prohibits excessive bail and fines, and prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.

Ninth Amendment

States that the enumeration of certain rights in the Constitution shall not be construed to deny or disparage other rights retained by the people.

Tenth Amendment

Establishes that powers not delegated to the federal government by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states or to the people.

Eleventh Amendment

Limits the ability of individuals to sue states in federal court.

Twelfth Amendment

Changes the method for electing the President and Vice President.

Thirteenth Amendment

Abolishes slavery and involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for a crime.

Fourteenth Amendment

Defines citizenship and protects citizens from discrimination by the states.

Fifteenth Amendment

Prohibits the denial of the right to vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

Sixteenth Amendment

Grants Congress the power to tax income.

Seventeenth Amendment

Establishes the direct election of Senators by the people.

Eighteenth Amendment

Prohibited the sale, transportation, and manufacture of alcohol in the United States (repealed by the Twenty-First Amendment).

Nineteenth Amendment

Prohibits the denial of the right to vote based on sex.

Twentieth Amendment

Establishes the terms of the President and Congress, and provides for the succession of the President.

Twenty-First Amendment

Repeals the Eighteenth Amendment and ends Prohibition.

Twenty-Second Amendment

Limits the President to two terms in office.

Twenty-Third Amendment

Grants citizens of Washington, D.C. the right to vote in presidential elections.

Twenty-Fourth Amendment

Prohibits poll taxes in federal elections.

Twenty-Fifth Amendment

Provides for the succession of the Vice President to the presidency in the event of the President's death, resignation, or incapacity.

Twenty-Sixth Amendment

Lowers the voting age to 18.

Twenty-Seventh Amendment

Requires that any law that increases the salaries of members of Congress does not take effect until after the next election.
