Foliated metamorphic rocks
Exhibit a planar fabric due to the alignment of minerals under differential stress Examples include slate, phyllite, schist, and gneiss
Slate
A low-grade metamorphic rock with a protolith of shale or mudstone, characterized by slaty cleavage
Phyllite
Forms from slate at higher temperatures, showing neocrystallization of mica and chlorite, resulting in phyllite texture
Schist
A higher-grade metamorphic rock than phyllite, with larger micas and other minerals, exhibiting schistosity
Gneiss
A high-grade metamorphic rock with a protolith of schist (or other rocks), characterized by gneissic banding
Metaconglomerate
A foliated metamorphic rock with a protolith of conglomerate, formed at low-to-mid-grade metamorphism
