What is primary hyperparathyroidism caused by?
adenoma of the parathyroid gland
what is hyperparathyroidism?
excess chronic secretion of PTH causes excessive osteoclastic activity leading to elevated plasma calcium, bone demineralization and risk for bone fractures
what is secondary hyperparathryoidism?
it is due to increased secretion of PTH secondary to malfunctions of other organ systems
ex: kidney failure, tumors, bone metastasis, vit D deficiency or laxative abuse
