What are the three roles of ATP in muscle contraction?
Detach myosin, energize myosin, and pump calcium
What happens if ATP is not available?
Muscles remain contracted (rigor)
What is rigor mortis?
Stiffening of muscles after death due to lack of ATP
Why is ATP needed for calcium removal?
To pump calcium back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum
Why is ATP essential for relaxation?
It breaks cross-bridges and removes calcium
What is a muscle twitch?
A single contraction-relaxation cycle
What are the three phases of a twitch?
Latent, contraction, and relaxation
What happens during the latent phase?
Signal travels but no visible contraction yet
What happens during the contraction phase?
Muscle shortens and produces force
What happens during the relaxation phase?
Muscle returns to resting length
What is summation?
Increased force from repeated stimulation
What is tetanus?
Sustained contraction with no relaxation
What causes tetanus?
Rapid repeated stimulation
