Matter
Stuff of which all materials are made: anything that has mass and takes up space.
Atoms
Extremely small building blocks of matter
Elements
made up of the same atoms, cannot be decomposed to other substances
Molecule
a combination of 2 or more atoms (same or different) that are covalently bonded.
compound
2 or more different elements bonded together in a fixed proportion
Law of Definite Composition
A given compound always contains the same, fixed ratio of elements
Law of Multiple Proportions
Elements can combine in different ratios to form different compounds
Mixtures
two or more substance that are not chemically combined
Heterogeneous mixtures
2 or more phases with different properties
Homogeneous mixtures
uniform properties in a sample and same compositions in a sample
Solution
a homogenous mixture no Tyndall effect (rubbing alcohol)
Suspension
heterogeneous, large particles, has Tyndall effect (orange juice)
Colloid
heterogeneous, medium particles, has Tyndall effect (milk)
