Periosteum
thin, tough membrane that covers the outer surface of bones
Perforating fibers
strong collagen fibers that anchor the periosteum to the bone.

Epiphysis
rounded end portion of a long bone.
articular cartilage
hyaline cartilage on ends of bones that reduces friction

Medullary cavity
inside the long bone; contains bone marrow
diaphysis “shaft”
long middle portion of the bone. between epiphyses.

compact bone
outer layer surrounding the medullary cavity
spongy bone
porous, lightweight lattice-like network found inside the epiphyses

endosteum
thin membrane that lines inner surfaces of bone, such as the medullary cavity and the spaces within spongy bone
red bone marrow
soft tissue that performs hematopoiesis. Located in the spongy bone of the epiphysis

yellow bone marrow
stores fat inside the medullary cavity of the diaphysis.
nutrient artery
main blood vessel that supplies blood to bone; located in the diaphysis
