• children is disappearing at a dazzling speed as they are increasingly given the same rights as adults

• blames this on ‘television culture’- modern media has contributed to a shorter childhood

• EVAL- focuses on harms of media instead of its useful and educational purposes as a support network for the isolated

Jenks + postmodern society

• childhood is just changing not disappearing (because society is moving into postmodernity)

• in post modern society, relationships are much less stable, children provide their parents with stability (only control in fast paced society)

• increased fear so children are more protected as they feel they are vulnerable

• EVAL- very generalised idea as not all children are equally vulnerable AND some people argue society is modern not postmodern

paranoid parenting- Furedi

• the news causes fear and a risk society

• the growth of an expert culture around childhood but ideas are contradicting

• parents feel they are only in control of their children

• THIS MEANS children lack opportunities to develop independently due to caution and creates anxious/paranoid children

accordion family

• as house prices increase, the chances for young people to move out decrease

• many children move out temporarily only to return after uni

• there is also now less stigma about living at home (roughly half of 23 year olds do)
