Simple Past
The action took place in the past and is completed.
Ex) Jenny worked a double shift at the mall yesterday.
Past Progressive
The action was taking place in the past when some other action began. (interruption)
ex) Jenny was working at the mall last night when the fire started.
Past perfect
The action took place at a specified point in time and then ended. (past)
ex) Jenny had worked at the mall before she went to college.
Simple present
The action takes place regularly / repeatedly.
ex) Jenny works at the mall everyday after school.
Present progressive
The action is taking place now for an extended period.
ex) Jenny is working at the mall until 9 o’clock tonight.
Present perfect
The action began in the past and is ongoing.
ex) Jenny has worked at the mall for the last two years.
Future progressive
The action will be taking place in the future when some other action occurs first.
ex) Jenny will be working at the mall when her friends begin gathering for her surprise party.
Future perfect
The action took place before another specified action or point in time in the future.
ex) Jenny will have worked for over 3 years at the mall when she graduates tomorrow.
Passive Voice
The subject is being acted upon. (bad)
ex) “The boy was licked by the dog“
Active Voice
The subject is doing the action. (ideal)
ex) “The dog licked the boy“
