Paleo-Indians

They were hunter gathers who lived off the meat of very large animals as well as fruit and nuts. They were the earliest Ohio inhabitants about 13,000-12,000 years ago, who used stone spears to kill large animals. The Paleo Points serve as a major source of archaeological evidence because there were a lot of them found in Ohio afterwards.

Mississippian Civilization

It took place about 1000 AD when an Indian Civilization emerged in the Mississippi Valley region. Near the Mississippi River, the soil was very nutrient rich, so the Indian farmers grew corn, maize, and squash. The adoption of agriculture led to a large population growth where people started living in denser settlements.

Fur Trade

It was the main economic activity of Ohio that united France with the Indians as well as British with the Indians in the 1600s. Europeans saw trade as commercial and Indians believed that trade was a part of diplomacy, and that the exchange of gifts meant a friendship pact. It created a lot of violent conflict between different Indian tribes who then fought each other for access to European trading partners and hunting grounds.

Lord Dunmore’s War

It was in response to Chief Logan’s attack, after the Virginia militia entered Ohio and destroyed the Indians Villages. The battle of Lord Dunmore’s War waged against the Mingo and Shawnee Indians of Ohio, and it took place at Point Pleasant. Dunmore forced Mingo and Shawnee to sign a peace treaty at Camp Charlotte ceding land south of the Ohio River to Virginians.

Hamilton’s Vision

His vision was to build a strong national government and turn the United States into power. In 1791, Hamilton presented to congress a report on manufactures which argues that the US should impose a high tariff to protect domestic industry to help promote factories. Hamilton’s vision was significant because he was pushing for economic development in the US.

The Great Hinckley Hunt

It happened on Christmas Eve in 1818 in Medina County. The historical context of the Great Hinckley Hunt took place during the Pioneer Phase. It was significant because by the end of this day, hundreds of animals like wolves, bears, deer, and other forests creatures were killed by driving them in a circle and murdering them all.

Transportation Revolution

It is where transportation improvements were made that made it easier for people to settle in isolated areas. It took the years between 1800 and 1850. It is significant because it opened more land area, and improvements made it easier and more affordable for frontier farmers to ship their goods to distant markets.

It took place during the antebellum era. It was where the “common man” received new political rights. It was significant because it showed a political system where class and economics was not as important and many more white men could vote.

It was introduced after the War of 1812 to the government. When the American System was implemented, it established the new Bank of the United States and protective tariffs. It was significant because it boosted the economy and led to westward migration.

It was the first major economic crisis of the era. It was caused by the rush to purchase western land after the War of 1812. The Panic of 1819 was a significant event because it had an impact on the American and Ohio psyche created the Market Revolution where a second party system was created.

It was a political party who desired a strong national government who would oversee economic development. For historical context, in 1840, the Whig Party had their first presidency win with William Henry Harrison. The Whig Party was significant because it was the rise of the Second Party System.
