how words are put together to form/organizes meaning
Look at the rules and the patterns that guide sentence structure/ how different sentence types work
Vd: understand why some sentences are correct and others are not
Also, explain how a change in the order of words can change the meaning/ how parts of a sentence relate to each other
Major word classes
called open classes
Large categories that can easily accept a new words
Include (N, V, Adj, Adv)
Carry the main meaning in the sentence
Express meaning
Have referential meaning ( involve reference, actual things, events, actions)
Are receptive to a new members
Minor word classes
called close classes
Rarely accept a new word
Serve as a grammatical function > main meaning.
Include prepositions, conjunctions, determiners, and pronouns.
Fix ( opposite of Major word classes) and provide structure in communication

Know the words used in the sentence
By looking at categories, we can see how the word marks time, relationship, quantity, or role in a sentence
Attributive
appear before N and describe it
Give information directly before N
Part of Noun Phrase

appear after linking V and describe the subject
comes in predicate and describe the subject
Part of the clause predicted
Both qualities but their position differs
