OSI Model
A conceptual framework used to understand and implement networking protocols and systems, dividing network communication into seven abstraction layers.
Layer 1, Physical
The OSI model layer responsible for the transmission and receipt of data signals over a physical medium.
Layer 3, Network
The OSI layer responsible for moving data around a network and handling routing between different networks.
Layer 4, Transport
The OSI layer that is responsible for end-to-end communication, connection management, and error recovery.
RJ-45
A common type of connector for Ethernet cables used to connect devices in a local area network.
Subnet Mask
A 32-bit address that divides an IP address into network and host portions, used to define the range of IP addresses within a subnet.
IPv4
Internet Protocol version 4, a widely used protocol for routing traffic on the internet that uses 32-bit addresses.
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, a network management protocol used to automate the process of IP address allocation.
Firewall
A network security device or software that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules.
PoE (Power over Ethernet)
A technology that allows network cables to carry electrical power along with data to devices like IP cameras and voice over IP phones.
LAN (Local Area Network)
A computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, school, or office building.
WAN (Wide Area Network)
A telecommunications network that extends over a large geographical area, typically consisting of multiple LANs.
VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network)
A subnetwork that can group together collections of devices from different physical LANs.
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
A technology that creates a secure connection over a less secure network, such as the Internet.
MAC address
A unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications at the data link layer of a network segment.
Packet
A formatted unit of data carried by a packet-switched network.
WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)
A wireless network that allows devices to connect and communicate wirelessly over a short range.
SSID (Service Set Identifier)
A unique identifier that names a wireless network.
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
A technology that enables voice communication over Internet Protocol networks.
NAT (Network Address Translation)
A method used by routers to translate private (not globally unique) addresses into public IP addresses.
DNS (Domain Name System)
A hierarchical system for naming resources on the Internet, converting domain names into IP addresses.
