What is the main problem of religious language and why does it matter?
-It’s not possible to meaningfully talk about things we don’t understand.
-Most Christians agree that God is beyond human comprehension.
-This raises the problem of how Christians can meaningfully talk about God at all.
-Via negativa, analogy, and symbolic language, attempt to solve this by explaining how it is possible to meaningfully describe or connect with God despite our limited understanding.
What is the Via Negativa and who proposed it?
-Via negativa, also called the apophatic way, claims we cannot meaningfully say what God is; we can only say what God is not. The theory is attributed to Pseudo-Dionysius.
-It relies on negative language to express God’s transcendence, emphasising that God is beyond all human categories, distinctions, and comprehension.
-Positive language is avoided because it implies something finite about God.
How does positive and negative language differ in philosophy and via negativa?
-In ordinary language, positive words describe what something is, and negative words describe what it is not.
-Philosophical negative language is used differently: for example, “my cat is not orange” is negative, “my cat is black” is positive.
-Via negativa applies this to God: by saying what God is not, we approach the reality of God without misrepresenting the divine nature.
How does via negativa describe God as beyond distinctions like physicality or light?
-Saying God is not darkness does not imply God is light; it shows that God is beyond both darkness and light.
-Similarly, saying God is not physical does not mean God is non-physical, but that God is beyond the physical/non-physical distinction.
-Negative language demonstrates that God transcends categories and human concepts.
How does via negativa help prevent anthropomorphising God?
-It shows that human language cannot fully capture God’s nature.
-By avoiding positive descriptions, it prevents imagining God as a human figure, like a bearded man in the clouds.
-Pseudo-Dionysius calls this the “cloud of unknowing,” helping believers focus on spiritual unity rather than intellectual comprehension.
