スーパー (sūpā)
Supermarket. This is where you can find a variety of goods including groceries, household items, and more. Example sentence: 私はスーパーに行きます。(Watashi wa sūpā ni ikimasu.) - I am going to the supermarket.
食料品 (しょくりょうひん, shokuryōhin)
Groceries. These are food items that you buy from a store. Example sentence: 食料品を買いに行きましょう。(Shokuryōhin o kai ni ikimashou.) - Let's go buy groceries.
レジ (reji)
Cash register. This is where you pay for your items. Example sentence: レジでお金を払います。(Reji de okane o haraimasu.) - I will pay at the cash register.
店員 (てんいん, ten'in)
Store clerk. The person who works at the store and assists customers. Example sentence: 店員に質問しました。(Ten'in ni shitsumon shimashita.) - I asked the store clerk a question.
カート (kāto)
Shopping cart. A cart used to carry groceries while shopping. Example sentence: カートを押してください。(Kāto o oshite kudasai.) - Please push the cart.
袋 (ふくろ, fukuro)
Bag. A container used to carry purchased items. Example sentence: 袋は必要ですか?(Fukuro wa hitsuyō desu ka?) - Do you need a bag?
果物 (くだもの, kudamono)
Fruits. Edible sweet or savory products of flowering plants. Example sentence: 果物を食べるのが好きです。(Kudamono o taberu no ga suki desu.) - I like to eat fruits.
野菜 (やさい, yasai)
Vegetables. Edible plants or parts of plants. Example sentence: 野菜は健康に良いです。(Yasai wa kenkō ni yoi desu.) - Vegetables are good for health.
肉 (にく, niku)
Meat. Edible animal flesh. Example sentence: 昨日、肉を買いました。(Kinō, niku o kaimashita.) - I bought meat yesterday.
魚 (さかな, sakana)
Fish. Aquatic animals that are eaten as food. Example sentence: 魚を料理しました。(Sakana o ryōri shimashita.) - I cooked fish.
米 (こめ, kome)
Rice. Staple food in Japan. Example sentence: 米を炊きました。(Kome o takimashita.) - I cooked rice.
パン (pan)
Bread. A common staple food. Example sentence: パンは朝食に食べます。(Pan wa chōshoku ni tabemasu.) - I eat bread for breakfast.
飲み物 (のみもの, nomimono)
Beverages. Drinks like coffee, tea, or soda. Example sentence: 飲み物を注文しました。(Nomimono o chūmon shimashita.) - I ordered a drink.
お菓子 (おかし, okashi)
Snacks. Light food or candies, usually sweet. Example sentence: お菓子を買いに行きましょう。(Okashi o kai ni ikimashou.) - Let's go buy snacks.
試食 (ししょく, shishoku)
Sample tasting. Trying small amounts of food to taste it before buying. Example sentence: 試食を楽しみました。(Shishoku o tanoshimimashita.) - I enjoyed the sample tasting.
特売 (とくばい, tokubai)
Sale or special price. Discounts offered on certain items. Example sentence: 明日は特売がある。(Ashita wa tokubai ga aru.) - There is a sale tomorrow.
買い物 (かいもの, kaimono)
Shopping. The act of purchasing items from a store. Example sentence: 買い物に行くのが好きです。(Kaimono ni iku no ga suki desu.) - I like to go shopping.
クーポン (kūpon)
Coupon. A voucher for a discount on purchases. Example sentence: クーポンを使いました。(Kūpon o tsukaimashita.) - I used a coupon.
掃除 (そうじ, sōji)
Cleaning. Keeping the store tidy. Example sentence: 掃除をします。(Sōji o shimasu.) - I will do the cleaning.
店 (みせ, mise)
Store. A place where goods are sold. Example sentence: 新しい店がオープンしました。(Atarashii mise ga ōpun shimashita.) - A new store has opened.
冷蔵庫 (れいぞうこ, reizōko)
Refrigerator. An appliance used to keep food cold. Example sentence: 冷蔵庫に食べ物があります。(Reizōko ni tabemono ga arimasu.) - There is food in the refrigerator.
惣菜 (そうざい, sōzai)
Side dishes. Prepared foods typically sold in supermarkets. Example sentence: 惣菜を買いました。(Sōzai o kaimashita.) - I bought side dishes.
果物売り場 (くだものうりば, kudamono uriba)
Fruit section. The area in the store where fruits are sold. Example sentence: 果物売り場を探してください。(Kudamono uriba o sagashite kudasai.) - Please look for the fruit section.
野菜売り場 (やさいうりば, yasai uriba)
Vegetable section. The area in the store for vegetables. Example sentence: 野菜売り場で選びました。(Yasai uriba de erabimashita.) - I chose vegetables in the vegetable section.
パッケージ (pakkēji)
Package. The wrapping or box that contains a product. Example sentence: パッケージを開けました。(Pakkēji o akemashita.) - I opened the package.
ブランド (burando)
Brand. The name of a company that sells products. Example sentence: このブランドは人気があります。(Kono burando wa ninki ga arimasu.) - This brand is popular.
チェックアウト (chekku auto)
Checkout. The process of paying for purchased items. Example sentence: チェックアウトに並びました。(Chekku auto ni narabimashita.) - I lined up at the checkout.
新鮮 (しんせん, shinsen)
Fresh. Refers to food that is newly picked or made. Example sentence: この野菜は新鮮です。(Kono yasai wa shinsen desu.) - This vegetable is fresh.
賞味期限 (しょうみきげん, shōmi kigen)
Expiration date. The date until a product is guaranteed to be fresh. Example sentence: 賞味期限を確認してください。(Shōmi kigen o kakunin shite kudasai.) - Please check the expiration date.
返品 (へんぴん, henpin)
Return. The act of bringing back a purchased item. Example sentence: 返品ができるか確認します。(Henpin ga dekiru ka kakunin shimasu.) - I will check if I can return this.
取扱説明書 (とりあつかいせつめいしょ, toriatukai setsumeisho)
Instruction manual. A document that provides instructions for using a product. Example sentence: 取扱説明書を読みました。(Toriatukai setsumeisho o yomimashita.) - I read the instruction manual.
買い物袋 (かいものぶくろ, kaimono bukuro)
Shopping bag. A reusable or disposable bag for carrying purchased items. Example sentence: 買い物袋を持ってきました。(Kaimono bukuro o motte kimashita.) - I brought a shopping bag.
