gave numerous personal accounts that did not steer away from the brutality the slaves endured- forced people to see it and not project image of “happy slave”, strength of literacy (it being symbol of freedom), power corrupts even “kinder” masters

no one responsible for ridding slavery other than slaves - did what they could but couldn’t provide legal backing which Lincoln did, Lincoln not friend of slavery and anyone in his position would’ve emancipated, multiple people worked to abolition

view on slavery is nuanced, but myth of black-self emancipation risks overlooking Lincoln’s work, EP confirmed legal standing of freedom, Lincoln only person who would’ve emancipated (Union victory freed slaves), Lincoln freed slaves but cannot be oversimplified to such

changed purpose of Civil War into fight over slavery, not unity, used as rhetoric that Lincoln freed slaves when he didn’t, text itself is military/war focused (focus still on war/Union not the rights of blacks), only freed slaves in Confed states to get them to rejoin Union to keep slavery

set new oratory standards, used call to action and the dead soldiers to unite the Union, did not call out Confederacy as the enemy (interesting language choice)
