Containment

Platform for LBJ campaign, It stressed the 5 Ps Peace, Prosperity, and anti-Poverty Prudence and Progress. It was LBJ's domestic agenda . He cut poverty and fought for civil rights for African Americans.

Great Society

A lessening of tensions between U.S. and Soviet Union. Besides disarming missiles to insure a lasting peace between superpowers, Nixon pressed for trade relations and a limited military budget. The public did not approve.

Detente

Gave any president the power to go to war under certain circumstances, but required that he could only do so for 90 days before being required to officially bring the matter before Congress.

War Powers Act

Introduced by Secretary of State George G. Marshall in 1947, he proposed massive and systematic American economic aid to Europe to revitalize the European economies after WWiI and help prevent the spread of Communism

Marshall Plan

1947 - Stated that the U.S. would support any nation threatened by Communism especially in Greece and Turkey

Truman Doctrine

To counter the NATO buildup, the Soviets formed this military organization with the nations of Eastern Europe. Also gave Russia excuse for garrisoning troops in these countries

Warsaw Pact

October, 1957 - The first artificial satellite sent into space, launched by the Soviets. The U.S. govt reacted by creating NASA and putting an emphasis on math and science in schools.

Sputnik

The Soviet Union was secretly building nuclear missile launch sites in Cuba, which could have ben used for a sneak-attack on the U.S. The U.S, blockaded Cuba until the U.S.S.R. agreed to dismantle the missile silos.

Cuban Missile Crisis

June 17, 1972 - five men arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee's executive quarters in the Watergate Hotel. Two White House aides were indicted; they quit, Senate hearing began in May, 1973, Nixon admitted to complicity in the burglary. In July, 1974, Nixon's impeachment began, so he resigned with a disbarment.

NATO

Committee in the House of Representatives founded on a temporary basis in 1938 to monitor activities of foreign agents. Made a standing committee in 1945. During World War II it investigated pro-fascist groups, but after the wer it turned to investigating alleged communists. From 1947-1949, it conducted a series of sensational investigations into supposed communist infiltration of the U.S. government and Hollywood film industry.

HUAC

Cesar Chavez was the non-violent leader of this organization from 1963-1970. Organized laborers in California and in the Southwest to strike against fruit and vegetable growers. Unionized Mexican-American farm workers.
