solute
The substance that is dissolved in a solution.
solvent
The substance that dissolves the solute in a solution.
molarity (M)
A concentration measurement expressing the number of moles of solute per liter of solution.
normality (N)
A concentration measurement expressing the number of equivalents of solute per liter of solution.
specific gravity
A method of measuring density, the mass of a substance compared to an equal volume of water.
percent concentration
A measure of concentration defined as parts of solute per 100 parts of solution.
density
The mass of a substance per unit volume.
Avogadro's number
The number of particles in one mole of a substance, approximately 6.022 imes 10^{23}.
equivalent weight
The mass of a substance that will combine with or replace one mole of hydrogen ions.
parts
A term that gives relationships of substances in a solution without specifying units.
gram molecular weight (gmw)
The mass of one mole of a substance in grams.
milliliters (mL)
A unit of volume equal to one-thousandth of a liter.
milliequivalent
One-thousandth of an equivalent.
hydrate
A compound that contains water in its structure.
solution
A mixture of two or more substances, not in chemical combination.
parts per million (ppm)
A way of expressing very dilute concentrations of substances.
dilution
The process of reducing the concentration of a solute in a solution.
