How does energy transfer work along a food chain
sun is the source of energy for nearly all life on earth
plants use sun as energy to make food (photosynthesis)
when the primary consumer eats the producer not all the energy is transferred (at each trophic level energy is lost) 100% becomes 90"%
secondary consumer may not eat all of the animal e.g bones and fur → energy isn’t taken in
some energy is lost a faeces
most energy is used in respiration
only 10% of energy is passed down at each trophic level
What do food webs show
food webs show how food chains are linked to each other
How do food chains start
They all start with a producer (photosynthetic organism)
As energy is passed up the trophic levels
energy is lost
As you go up the group the arrows show……..
the energy transfer
