Mise en scène
When applied to the cinema, mise-en-scène refers to everything that appears before the camera—the sets, props, costumes, actors, and even the lighting! These elements help to express a film's vision by generating a sense of time and space, as well as setting a mood!
Composition
The way in which the components of design are visually combined and arranged! Takes into account: placement, grouping, alignment, visual flow, and the divisions of space within a layout!
Component
The visual elements used within a design, photo, illustration, icon, typography, linework, borders and backgrounds are all components!
Concept
Abstract elements of theme, connotation, message and style! These intangible ingredients of a design or image are critical to its visual presentation and delivery of message!
3 C’s
Composition, Component, Concept
Very few designers are given much of a background in art history because
The knowledge is considered not important by the industry, therefore design education, like society, encourage the creation of individualists that do not follow a specific “school”!
Principles
Are much like any utility available to a designer! They are akin to having a preferred method of interrogating or path finding the solution to the problem!
Art is an ? and Design is a ?
Art is an Expression and Design is a Solution
Balance
Distribution of visual weight of objects, colors, textures, and space! If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable!
Symmetrical Balance
The elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side!
Asymmetrical Balance
The sides are different but still look balanced!
Radial Balance
The elements are arranged around a center point and may be similar!
Weight
A good technique for mastering asymmetrical balance is to think of each element as having a ‘weight’ to it! Smaller objects might weight less than larger objects!
