Musculoskeletal System
Includes bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, bursae, and muscles of the human body.
Osteoporosis
A condition characterized by decreased bone density and loss of structural integrity of bone.
Osteoblasts
Bone building cells.
Osteoclasts
Bone destroying cells.
Arthritis
Inflammatory joint disease affecting more than 15% of the population; includes osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.
Osteoarthritis
Most prevalent joint disorder, often due to a known event or condition; involves articular cartilage degradation and bone stiffening.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
Chronic systemic, autoimmune disease causing inflammation of connective tissue in synovial joints.
Gout
Complex, recurring, inflammatory arthritis caused by disruption of uric acid metabolism.
Septic Arthritis
Infectious arthritis caused by bacteria invading the joint cavity.
Psoriatic Arthritis
Chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory joint disorder often associated with psoriasis.
Fracture
Break in the continuity of a bone.
Open Fracture
Fracture in which bone breaks through the skin.
Closed Fracture
Fracture with no break in the skin.
Sprain
Injury involving a tear or stretch of a ligament surrounding a joint.
Strain
Injury involving a tear, twist, or excessive stretch of a muscle, its sheath, and/or its tendon.
