Decimal
A small dot after the ones place that indicates a number has some digits with a value less than one (i.e. tenths, hundredths, etc.).
Denominator
The lower number of a fraction that indicates its unit size as well as the number of parts in one whole. When viewing a fraction as division, the denominator is the divisor.
Equivalent
Equivalent means equal. Equivalent fractions represent the same value with different numerators and denominators. An equivalent fraction and decimal represent the same value.
Fraction
A number representing a value greater than or less than a whole with a numerator and denominator.
Generate
In regards to fractions, “generate an equivalent” means to create an equivalent fraction using multiplication or division.
Improper fraction
A fraction with a value greater than one; The numerator of an improper fraction is greater than its denominator.
Mixed number
A fraction that contains a whole number value as well as a fraction
Numerator
The upper number of a fraction that indicates the portion of a whole being discussed; When viewing a fraction as division, the numerator is the dividend.
Percent
A number represented as a portion of 100. Percents are written with a percent sign (%) and can be converted to and from fractions, decimals, and whole numbers.
Repeating decimal
A decimal created when the numerator of a fraction is not evenly divisible by its denominator, so a digit or a series of digits repeat
Simplify
To manipulate a value to a different but equivalent form; dividing the numerator and denominator of a fraction by a common factor to reduce it to a simpler, or its simplest, form
Terminating decimal
A decimal with digits after the decimal point that are finite (i.e. 3.5, 6.298)
