PT stands for:
Prothrombin time
INR stands for:
International normalized ratio - standardizes the PT results
PT/INR
Measures how long it takes for blood to clot - evaluates the extrinsic/common pathways, primarily for warfarin
Prolonged PT/INR
Indicative of warfarin therapy, or liver disease
D-Dimer
Protein fragment produced when a blood clot dissolves - fibrin degradation product
Elevated D-Dimer implications:
Elevated in DVT (deep vein thrombosis), PE (pulmonary embolism), DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation)
aPTT stands for:
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time
aPTT function:
Blood test measuring how long it takes for blood to clot - evaluates intrinsic/common pathways, often for heparin
Instances of prolonged aPTT
During heparin therapy, & hemophilia
