Permanent Magnets
Magnets that are always magnetic and always have poles.
Induced Magnets
Materials that become magnetic when in the presence of a magnetic field, but do not have fixed poles.
Magnetic Field
An invisible force field around a magnet, illustrated by field lines pointing from the north to the south pole.
Right Hand Grip Rule
A rule used to determine the direction of a magnetic field around a current-carrying wire.
Solenoid
A coil of wire that produces a magnetic field when an electric current passes through it.
Motor Effect
The interaction of two magnetic fields that results in a force on the wire carrying current.
Fleming’s Left Hand Rule
A rule to determine the direction of force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field.
Electromagnetic Induction
The process of generating a potential difference across a conductor when it is moved through a magnetic field.
Dynamo
A device that converts mechanical energy into direct current (DC) electricity.
Transformer
A device that changes the voltage of alternating current (AC) by using coils of wire.
