Linear Equation
An equation that makes a straight line when graphed.
No Solution
A situation in which an equation does not have any solutions.
Extraneous Solution
A solution that arises from the process of solving the equation but is not a valid solution.
Absolute Value
The distance of a number from zero on the number line, always non-negative.
Isolate
To solve for a variable by getting it alone on one side of the equation.
Inequality
A statement that compares two expressions using inequality signs (>, <, ≥, ≤).
Function
A relation where each input has exactly one output.
Domain
The set of all possible input (x) values for a function.
Range
The set of all possible output (y) values of a function.
Slope-Intercept Form
A linear equation written as y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
Point-Slope Form
A linear equation written as y - y₁ = m(x - x₁), where m is the slope and (x₁, y₁) is a point on the line.
Parallel Lines
Lines that have the same slope and never intersect.
Perpendicular Lines
Lines that intersect at a right angle, having slopes that are opposite reciprocals.
Linear Regression
A statistical method used to model the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables.
Correlation Coefficient
A number between -1 and 1 that indicates the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two variables.
