What is the main idea of discrete emotions theory?
Emotions are innate and have evolved to allow humans to experience a set of basic emotions. According to this theory emotions are largley automatic and not based on cognition.
What is the evidence for the discrete emotions theory?
Infants show emotions before being taught. Similar emotions were observed across different cultures globally.
What is the main idea of the functionalist perspective?
Emotions serve an adaptive function, helping people to manage their relationship with the environment also allowing them to see if it supports or threatens their well being.

Describe the timeline of happiness
During the 1st month fleeting smiles occur during rem sleep. Between the 3rd and 8th weeks of life smiles can be a reaction to external stimuli. During the 3rd month smiling can be directed towards people.
Describe the timeline of fear
Fear shows at 7 months and separation anxiety shows during 8 months.
Describe the timeline for anger
Anger shows at 12 months and the peak time for anger to be displayed is 18 to 24 months (1 to 2).
Describe how infants show anger and why
Infants show anger in response to frustration or threatening situations. Anger however is not solely expressed on its own but rather mixed with sadness.
Why is Authoritarian parents an issue for the emotion of anger?
Because punishment and minimization will just produce more anger within the child.

It is an evolutionary behavior and helps us to avoid poison and disease causing bacteria.
