What states were in the upper south?
North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
What states were in the deep south?
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina
Upper south facts:
- Culturally and demographically distinct from the Deep South, colonized more from the Chesapeake Bay and Midland
- Did not secede from the Union as early as the Deep South during the Civil War
- Less dependent on plantation agriculture and slavery than the Deep South
Deep south facts:
- Some definitions include eastern parts of Texas and Florida due to their history of slavery, large African American populations, and membership in the Confederacy
- Tennessee, particularly West Tennessee, is sometimes included due to its history of slavery, prominence in cotton production, and cultural similarity to the Mississippi Delta
- Arkansas is sometimes considered part of the "Rim South" rather than the core Deep South region
