Fertility
The actual production of offspring in a population.
Fecundity
The physical ability to reproduce.
Crude birth rate
The number of births in a year per thousand persons in a population, not adjusted for population characteristics.
Total fertility rate
The number of children born to an average woman in a population during her entire reproductive life.
Zero population growth (ZPG)
Occurs when births plus immigration equal deaths plus emigration, requiring several generations of replacement-level fertility.
Population momentum
The continued population growth that occurs as a result of a large number of young people in a population.
Crude death rates (mortality rates)
The number of deaths per thousand persons in any given year.
Life span
The oldest age to which a species is known to survive.
Life expectancy
The average age that a newborn infant can be expected to attain in a given society.
