What is the cause of Mao’s death?
It is unknown as opinions differ on what medical condition he was suffering from. His heart was affected by years of smoking, he suffered from lung infections and possibly Parkinson’s disease.
Why was choosing a successor for Mao problematic?
From 1973 onwards he was dependent on drugs that rendered him comatose most of the time. From January 1976 until his death he was incapable of giving any decisive guidance.
Who did Mao finally choose as his successor?
Hua Goufeng → a Politburo member and capable administrator
What did Hua do in response to the Gang of Four trying to undermine him?
He went into an alliance with military commanders in the PLA and when Mao died he took over as head of party and state.
What happened to Deng after the Tiananmen incident?
Deng had been stripped of his posts but he felt safe enough to return to politics from his exile and replaced Hua in 1980.
What happened to the Gang of Four?
They were arrested by the army and went on trial in 1980.
