What does thermodynamics refer to?
Thermodynamics = A measure of whether a reaction occur. How long does it take for a reaction out of equilibrium to reach it.
What does kinetics refer to?
How fast a reaction proceeds. How quickly equilibrium is reached.
What determines thermodynamics?
Equilibrium concentrations
What is the thermodynamic constant?
K = equilibrium constant = [Products]eq / [Reactants] eq
What is thermodynamics determined by?
Free energy = delta G = taken from change in enthalpy and change in entropy
What determines kinetics?
The rate of reactions
That is the kinetics constant?
k = rate constants
What is kinetics determined by?
Activation Energy
What are reactions slow without enzymes?
(1) Reactions must collide (2) in the correct orientation (3) with enough energy to overcome the activation energy. (4) And they must remain close together for the duration of the reaction.
How do enzymes increase the rate of reactions?
They decrease the activation energy by helping place the substrates close together in the correct orientation.
