What is a Collision?
A situation in which two objects in close contact exchange energy
What is the Activation energy?
Minimum energy needed to get a reaction started
What does Orientation mean?
position/direction/angle between a pair of objects (aim)
Temperature
Measurement of the SPEED of particles
A + B -> AB **where are the reactants found?
left side of the arrow (A+ B), the "ingredients"/starting materials
A + B-> AB **where are the products found?
right side of the arrow (AB), the RESULT of a reaction
What does the collision theory state?
Reactions require a COLLISION, activation ENERGY, and proper ORIENTATION.
Law of Conservation of energy
energy cannot be created or destroyed only moved/spread
What the arrow means in a chemical equation A + B --> AB
yields or produces (it would be the effective collision taking place)
effective collision
Collision between reactant particles that DOES lead to the formation of products (successful collision)
ineffective collision
Collision between reactant particles that DOESN'T lead to the formation of products (failed collision)
law of conservation of MASS
- mass cannot be created or destroyed in chemical reaction (magic isn't real)
threshold
a limit or barrier
