Depth in Art

The illusion of three dimensions on a two-dimensional surface.

Atmospheric Perspective

The manipulation of color to create the illusion of depth.

Linear Perspective

A form of perspective in which parallel lines are represented as converging to create the illusion of depth.

Horizon Line

A line ⅓ of the way up or down in a canvas that separates the sky from the earth.

Vanishing Point

The point at which lines converge in a linear perspective drawing.

Converge

The act of coming together in a single location.

Guidelines

Faint lines that are drawn to create the illusion of perspective and are erased in the final drawing.

One-Point Perspective

A linear perspective that utilizes a single vanishing point.

Two-Point Perspective

A linear perspective that utilizes two vanishing points.

Vertical Features

Objects in a drawing that are on the vertical plane (e.g., street lamps, telephone poles, fences).

Horizontal Features

Objects in a drawing that are on the horizontal plane (e.g., sidewalks, rivers, railroad tracks).
