Cardiac Output (Qc)
Amount of blood pumped by the heart per minute; increases with aerobic training.
Stroke Volume (SV)
The amount of blood ejected by the heart in each beat; increases with aerobic training.
Angiogenesis
The physiological process through which new blood vessels form from pre-existing vessels; increases with aerobic training.
VO2max
Maximal oxygen uptake; increases with aerobic training.
Mitochondrial density
Increases in muscle due to aerobic training.
Capillary density
Increases in muscle due to aerobic training.
Myoglobin content
Increases in muscle due to aerobic training.
Lactate Threshold (LT)
The exercise intensity at which lactate begins to accumulate in the blood at a faster rate than it can be removed; a factor related to aerobic exercise performance.
Heart Rate Reserve (HRR)
The difference between maximal heart rate and resting heart rate; used to prescribe aerobic training intensity.
Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE)
A subjective measure of how hard an individual feels they are working during exercise; can be used to monitor aerobic training intensity (Borg Scale).
Hypothermia
A dangerous drop in body temperature due to prolonged exposure to cold; a precaution to consider during aerobic exercise in cold temperatures.
Frostbite
Tissue damage caused by exposure to extreme cold; a precaution to consider during aerobic exercise in cold temperatures.
Acclimatization
The process of adapting to changes in the environment.
