HON 2301: Midterm Genesis

God/ LORD God

God is the all-powerful creator who gives life, makes covenants, and curses sin but shows mercy by preserving Noah, Abraham, and their descendants.

Adam

Formed from dust and god’s breath and given dominion over god’s creatures. After eating forbidden fruit, he is punished with toiling the fields

Eve

God creates her from Adam’s rib after none of the animals were suitable companions. Convinced by serpent, she eats and shares forbidden fruit with Adam. God punished her and her descendants with severe pain in childbirth

Serpent

Suggests to Eve that she won’t die eats from Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil but become godlike in knowledge. cursed to have no legs.

Cain

Adam and eve’s first child. He is a farmer and God rejects his fruit. He kills his brother Abel and is punished to wander as a fugitive but places a mark so no one will kill him

Abel

Adam and Eve’s second son. Shepherd that brings god an offering of sheep and killed by Cain out of jealousy. Replaced by Seth

Noah

Son of Lamech and instructed by god to build an ark with 2 of each kinds of animal since he will flood the earth. After, he curses his son Ham for seeing him naked

Ham 

Noah’s son that was cursed after seeing his father naked. His descendants are slaves to his brothers and offspring. 

Abraham/ Abram

God has covenant with Abram to make a great nation of him in Canaan land in return for circumcision of his people. God tests his faith with the almost murder of Isaac.

Lot

Abrahams brother that is taken captive by King Chedorlaomer and is rescued by Abram. Lot protects angels in Sodom and fleeing its destruction. His two daughters conceive with him while drunk.

Sarah/ Sarai

Abram’s wife and mother of Isaac. Abram gives her to King abimelech and Pharaoh

King Abimelech

Ruler of Gerar warned by God not to touch Sarah after Abraham lies that she’s her sister. Happens again with Isaac and Rebekah, to which they make a covenant. 

Hagar

Sarai’s slave girl who Sarai gives to Abram to conceive. She flees with her son Ishmael. God hers her and promises a great nation

Isaac

Promised son of Abram and father of Jacob and Esau and husband of Rebekah. Almost sacrificed by his father and tricked by Jacob into giving him his birthright

Rebekah

Marries Isaac after Abram sent a servant to search for a wife for his son. Twins wrestle in her womb and favors Jacob.

Esau

Elder son of Isaac who exchanges his birthright for Jacob’s stew and is deceived later of his blessing. They reunite has 2 Hittite wives.

Jacob/ Israel

Esau’s younger brother that steps his blessing, tricked by Laban after fleeing, Gets rich and appeases Esau and fights a divine figure, resulting in his renaming of Israel. 

Laban

Jacob flees to Laban after tricking Esau from his blessing. Laban makes him work 7 years for Racheal but deceives him by giving Leah. He works another 7 years for Rachel and flees. Laban follows and accuses him of theft. They make covenant.

Rachel

wife of Jacob after 14 years of work but remains barren and jealous as she sees Leah conceive with Jacob. Conceives Joseph and dies while begetting Benjamin.

Leah

Laban marries Leah to Jacob first. She is less attractive than Rachel and God seeing that she is unloved gives her many children. 

Zilpah

Leah’s maid and Jacobs fourth wife

Reuben

Leah and Jacob’s first son that talks his brothers out of killing Joseph

Tamar

Was with Judah’s son’s Er and Onan but after their death, Judah sleeps with her thinking she was a prostitute

Dinah

last child of Leah and Jacob, raped by Schechem

Schechem

Rapes Dinah and wants to marry her but is deceived by Jacob to circumcise all his men and murdered in revenge.

Joseph

Favorite son of Jacob and is sold to slavery by his brothers after sharing his dream where they are servants. Sold to Egypt and is accused of rape by Potiphar’s wife but interprets Pharaoh’s dream and is in charge of the surplus during famine. He tells siblings to move to Goshen to provide for them

Pharaoh

Ruler of Egypt while Joseph was there. When Joseph successfully interprets his dreams, he is placed in charge of Egypt’s food surplus during famine.

BIlhah

Racheal’s maid and Jacob’s third wife

Babbel

the tower that people united to make to rich heavens but left unfinished after god dispersed the people with different languages

Sodom

place of god’s destruction because of sin

Onan

Judahs son that is punished by god for pulling out of Tamar
