Alliance

An agreement between at least two groups to support each other - especially during war

Boycott

A refusal to buy a good or use a service

Debt

Owing money to another party

Loyalists

Colonists who thought it was wrong to break away from Great Britain / King George

Militia

A volunteer army - somewhat trained, but not professionals

Monopoly

The complete control of the trade of a product

Parliament

The legislative branch of Great Britain

Patriots

Colonists who thought their only choice was to fight the British for independence

Petition

A formal written request to someone in authority

Quarter (Quartering Act)

A place to live

Treaty

A formal agreement between at least two parties (can end a war)

Tyranny

A government in which all power is in the hands of a single ruler
