Zone of Proximal Development
The space between what a learner can do without assistance and what a learner can do with adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers.
Joint attention/joint reference
A state where eye contact is established between an adult and a child, focusing on an object or event that becomes the focus of conversation.
Communication loop
A pattern of interaction that starts with a speaker initiating conversation, involves the exchange of information, and includes turn-taking between speakers and listeners.
Child-directed speech
A simplified and repetitive type of speech often called 'motherese,' characterized by exaggerated intonation and rhythm.
Verbal mapping
Providing additional information and details from the adult in response to the child's speech, elaborating and describing actions or objects.
